Periodontal disease is an infection which is caused by the film of bacteria, called biofilm, which coats everyone's teeth. It is most common among adults but can occur at any age. When plaque is not removed through daily brushing and flossing, it produces poisons and toxins that can irritate and cause the gums to seperate from the tooth and form deep spaces called pockets. Bacteria hide in these pockets and eat away the bone that is supporting the teeth. When left untreated, these teeth will eventually become loose and fall out.
Many studies have been conducted and studies are continuting today on periodontal disease. One of their conclusions is that nine in ten adults have a form of gum disease.
Periodontal disease affects not only your dental health but your total wellbeing. At one time the only way to treat this disease was through deep cleanings, antibiotics, and oral surgery. It was a process that did not eliminate the disease but only calmed it down for a short time before the cycle began once again. Today, we have a better way that is much more comfortable as well as more effective in treating periodontal disease. With the use of laser therapy, we can kill bacteria and promote gum tissue regeneration. This process is much more effective than the use of antibiotics and there are no bacteria that are resistant to lasers.
Most of us have heard about the build-up of plaque and calculus on our teeth. This condition allows bacteria to grow and multiply which over time causes cavities in the teeth and infection in the gum tissue. When left untreated it will put patients at risk for chronic diseases which include diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, cancer, and memory problems.
There are two essential methods which we use to treat periodontal disease and keep it in remission. Our first line of treatment consists of patient home care. First, we spend time with our patients and instruct them on proper brushing and flossing techniques. Innovative hygiene products such as the Hydrofloss, Rotadent, specific nutraceuticals are introduced which have been proven to promote wellness along with specified toothpaste and mouth rinse that bolster the immune system. When you, the patient, have been able to reduce your plaque score to a specified level, we will gently clean the tarter and calculus off the teeth. Then we will eliminate any remaining harmful bacteria that are still hiding in the “pockets” with laser therapy which creates tissue regeneration for pocket reduction or elimination.
Our treatment system is designed to fight periodontal disease as well as to support wellness throughout your entire body. It is non-surgical and is usually more affordable than traditional surgery that is done for this disease.
