Sleep Apnea

  • What is sleep apnea?

    It is one of the many sleep disorders such as snoring, restless leg syndrome, insomnia, narcolepsy, delayed sleep phase disorder, jet lag, etc! There are three forms of sleep apnea;
    1) Central - the brain fails to send a signal to breathe.
    2) Obstructive - there are physical obstructions to breathing.
    3) Mixed - a combination of central and obstructive.
  • Snoring

Snoring alone is a problem and has three possible important consequences:
    1) Disturbing the sleep of ones bed partner and those in seperate bedrooms.
    2) An independent factor in carotid atherosclerosis which is blockage of the artery supplying blood to the brain, which can lead to stroke.
    3) About 50% of the time it is a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Snoring is caused by soft tissues at the back of the throat vibrating due to a constricted airway.
  • Typical Symptoms

Symptoms of sleep apnea include: daytime sleepiness, snoring, teeth grinding, stop breathing, high blood pressure, morning headaches, forward head position, large neck size, night sweats, overweight, TMJ problems. It is diagnosed by a medical specialist using a sleep study.
  • Treatment

Treatment for OSA generally takes one of three forms:
    1) Oral appliance to advance the lower jaw and open the airway.
    2) A breathing machine (CPAP) to blow air into the lungs.
    3) Various surgeries. In some situations a combination of the first two options are utilized.
All oral appliances that Dr. Donley uses are custom made, fully adjustable, and FDA approved.
  • Why treat it?

Consequences of not treating sleep apnea may include: vehicle accidents, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, cancer, memory problems, irritability, depression, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure, night time acid reflux (GERD), A-fib, snoring, and TMD. Untreated it lowers the quality of life and shortens life by ten years or more.
  • Causes of OSA

One of the main causes of snoring and sleep apnea is excess weight (BMI greater than 30). Men with necks larger than 17 inches or women with necks larger than 16 inches.
